Cricket 1889

82 CBICKET: A WEEKLY BECORD OF THE GAME. MAY 2, 1889. Tom Heame, who was born at Chalfont St. Peters, Bucks, at the White Hart Inn, on Sept. 4, 1824, is consequently now near the completion of his sixty-fifth year. He first played for his parish when he was fourteen years of age. He removed in 1841 to Hare- field to learn the trade of a tailor, and after another move in 1844to Stoke, in Buckingham shire, returned to Harefield in 1848. Up to this date he had bowled fast underhand, but on the occasion of his second visit to Harefield he took up round-arm, and, as events proved, with no small success. E n gaged by Mr. Harvey Fellows, at Rick- mansworth, in 1849, he was actively associated with the Rickmansworth Club for eleven seasons, during which period he played occasionally for Hertfordshire. Since 1853 Hearne has resided in the Uxbridge Road at Ealing, and by virtue of his residence there he became qualified to represent Mid dlesex, for which county he did good service for many years. He was first engaged by the Marylebone Club in 1861, about which time hewas in the front rank as anall-roundcricketer. In 1863, when he was thirty-six years of age, he made his first appearance for the Players against the Gentlemen at the Oval. In suc cession to James Grundy, Hearne was ap pointed in 1872 superintendent of the ground bowlers at Lord’s, a position he has held up to the present time with distinct credit. He is, indeed, a great favourite with the members of the M.C.C., and is, in fact, one of the institu tions of the club, being much respected. In reward for his services the committee gave him a benefit matoh on Whit Monday, 1876, at Lord’s. PANTHER CLUB. F ix t u r e s f o r 1889. May 4 Catford, 1st XI. v. Club May 11 Catford, v. Oakley * Whole day Matches. SURREY COLTS v.J ROTHERH ITHE. The Surrey season was opened with this match, played at Kennington Oval yesterday afternoon. The Colts did not at the outset give promise of a long innings, as Street was the only one of the earlier batsmen to get double figures. When Melbourn, of Thames Ditton, and Large got together, however, a determined stand was made, and, as will be seen, these two youngsters were responsible for 128 out of 169 runs from the bat. Messrs. Aldred and Rowland did well for Rotherhithe at the commencement of the first innings, but the total only reached 96, Betts getting the last four wickets. Following on in a minority of 89 they made even a worse show, and Aldred proved to be the highest scorer with nine. Huish and Street bowled with great effect, the former taking five, the latter four wiokets. S u r r e y C o l t s . PUBLIC SCHOOL FIXTURES, 1889 BRADFIELD COLLEGE. May 25—Bradfield, v.
