Cricket 1889

CRICKET * A WEEKLY EECORD OF THE GAME. APRIL 25, 1889. should be able to render a good account of themselves. Burns and Littlewood are again engaged by the County Club, while young Carpenter, a son of old Bob Carpenter, is this season qualified to play. The match list is much the same as usual, though Hampshire is left out owing to financial reasons. D erbyshire is unfortunate in losing poor Cropper, and, as we learn the reply to the application made to the other Counties for leave to play Mr. Spoffortli in their matches has resulted in a refusal, the outlook for the Peak County is none too rosy. Surrey, Yorkshire, Notts, Essex, and Leicestershire, represent the list of county engagements. H ampshire have lost Mr. E. G. Wyn yard, who has left for India, but with this exception last season’s eleven will all be at the disposal of Mr. F. E. Lacey, who again takes command. Their fixtures include home and home matches with Surrey, Sussex, Warwickshire, Somerset shire, and Norfolk, also a fixture with the Gentlemen of Philadelphia. H ertfordshire have unearthed an ex pected good bowler in Johnstone, of St. Albans, but we think they are more for tunate in having in their county the best Public School player of last season in Mr. E. C. Streatfeild, who, if the County executive can only persuade him to assist, should prove of the greatest value to their team. L e ic e s t e r s h ir e ’s programme includes two matches with Surrey, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Essex, Derbyshire, and War wickshire. This is flying at high game for a minor county, but they did 10 well last year that the result of their season will be watched with great interest. N orthamptonshire have received a heavy blow in losing the assistance of Mold, but as a good many of the older amateur players have signified their in tention of assisting the club, their record should be a satisfactory one when Sept ember arrives. S omersetshire lose Fothergill, who has broken his residential qualification, but they will still have Nicholls and Tyler to represent their professional element. Mr. W. N. Roe takes command vice Mr. Sainsbury resigned, while good accounts are to hand as to the condition of the County Ground at Taunton. W arwickshire have a heavy job in hand in tackling Yorkshire, Lancashire, Gloucestershire, Leicestershire, Stafford shire, Somersetshire, and Hampshire, but with most of last year’s players nearly to assist the progress made the last year or two ought to be sustained. This short review brings us to the end of the chief county clubs, and only leaves us the two Universities to deal with. O xford will have Messrs. H. Philipson, W. Rashleigh, F. H. Gresson, A. C. M. Croome, Hon. F. J. S. Thesiger, and H. W . Foster. Supposing the above six are in good form, the following will most likely fight for the five vacancies, Messrs. A. K. Watson, C. Wreford-Brown, G. L. Wel don, H. J. E. Burrell, and M. J. Daug- lish amongst the Seniors, and Messrs. C. H. Gresson, M. Jardine and G. Cuming out of tlie Freshmen. C ambridge will have Mr. F. G. J. Ford as captain, and he will have under him Messrs. S. M. J. Woods, H. J. Mordaunt, F. Thomas, E. Crawley, E. M. Butler, R. C. Gosling, H. Hall, and G. McGregor, and as he has a long list of both Seniors and Freshmen to choose from he should have no difficulty in turn ing out a thoroughly representative team. PRINCIPAL FIXTURES IN 1889.
