Cricket 1889

NOV. 28, 1889. CKICKET: A WEEKLY EECORD OP THE GAME. 465 the latter lost five wickets for 73. For Belvi dere, no one scored anything of note, and the total was only increased by 30. In Albert’s 6 eoond innings, Charlton was one too many, and taking six wickets for 11 runs off 53 balls, the team was routed for 27, there being two absentees. Belvidere lost two wickets in making the 8 required to win. It was essen tially a bowlers’ match, Wearne for Albert obtaining six wickets for 48. On the University Oval, Sydney played the ’Varsity a one day’s match, and gave their opponents a good afternoon’s fielding; and indeed, Sydney lost only four wickets for 157. Of this number Mackenzie made 69 not out by very steady and correct play, and Cottam 34, H. Donnan and J. Searle each 20, were the others who obtained double figures. Mackenzie is a much admired player. He is not stylish, nor what may be termed pretty, but he is steady, and yet never throws away a fair chance of scoring. He is a moral certainty for the Inter-colonial, and I should not be surprised to see him in the English team, though I think he would do better to wait a couple of years before going home. Next Saturday Sydney play Carlton, and we shall have a most interesting match. It is probable ‘'B illy” Murdoch will not play cricket till after the Melbourne Cup. H®is not yet in praotice at the nets, and conse quently will not have too much time to get off the adipose. The Association meeting is fixed for Mon day next. Ructions are promised. Limited) held at the Holborn Restaurant on the 15th, a silver mounted liqueur and cigar cabinet was presented to Mr. A. T. Pearce by upwards of three hundred subscribers in recognition of many years of energetic service as the Hon. Sec. and Captain of the Club. A.E. C o x a l l , who during the past season played for St. Mark’s (Battersea Rise) Choir C.C., had a remarkable bowling average. Against such strong junior clubs as the Bat tersea Grammar School, Broomwood, etc., he bowled 180 overs, 86 maidens, 95 wickets for 200 runs. This is an average of a fraction over 2 runs per wicket, and considering the number of overs bov'led, is a capital perform ance. The Choir Club was formed in the spring of the present year, and out of 19 matches played, 16 were won. A very satis- .factory record for a firstseason. NEXT ISSUE, DECEMBER 27.
