Cricket 1889
SEPT. 12, 1889. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME; 399 been credited with. There are few counties, however, who would not hail with delight the invention of a new bowler; while a good amateur or two who could bowl well would be of the utmost service to the Gentlemen ; but bowling does not seem to be a popular branch of the game. Heaven-born bowlers are few and far between; and not many ap pear to take the trouble to practise; at any rate, not the trouble which old “ L illy ” did not consider to be too much, and which enabled him to say, “ I bouls the best ball in England, and Mr. Harenc the next.” Farmer Wood, too, another Sussex man of olden time, did not gain his reputation without trouble. It was his custom to carry a cricket ball with him whenever he walked about his farm, and he was always bowling at some thing or other, a dog acting as fieldsman. During the past season, however, the bowling and fielding combined have been good enough to cause 17 batsmen to depart with the muchhated “ pair of specs,” and it may be remarked that the new rule (capable of being abused) permitting the in side to declare their innings at an end has been made use of during the continu ance of four county matches. Although county cricket is over, those who take active participation in the game have not necessarily an idle time before them. Perambulators, Omnium Gatherums , and other travelling combinations will go on tour for some time, and any cricketer of skill will be gladly welcomed as a tem porary member of the club of the place at which he elects to sojourn till the sterner duties of.life shall call him to work again. AN ELEVEN OF YOUNG HARROW v. AN ELEVEN OF YOUNG HERTFORD SH IRE . During the last 21 years, 1 8 matches have been played at Gorhambury, between Young Harrovians and E levens connected w ith Hertfordshire. By the kindness and hosp i ta lity o f the Earl o f Verulam , another has now been added to that number, and on Tuesday, the 30th of Ju ly , the rival parties m e t and played ont the match in th© day, thanks to the energy o f both the Earl of Bessborough and Mr. H . E . Crawley (the latter show ing his true cricket spirit by playing on after seven o ’clock in order to finish the matoh). A splendid day and brilliant assemblage of county fam ilies added to the pleasures o f the day. The ground was much in favour o f the bow lers, who were assisted by very good fielding, especially in the first innings. Good h itting was shown by Mathews, Chaplin, C layton , and Phelns for Harrovians, and by Stogdon , Lofts, Holland, Bull and Swete for the Crawleyites. Stogdon and Bo jer bowled well for their side, although Bojer was not able to get the number o f wiokets his steadiness deserved, owing to balls rising too high over the wiokets. The best bow fing of the day was shown by a very young cricketer, Bam ford , who got eight wickets in the first innings, and five in the second. The match was played out, ow ing to the generous perm ission given by Mr. C rawley to continue the match after the usual hour of play. Once m ore were a large number o f players and spectators most hospitably entertained by the venerable Earl o f Verulam . Scores :— 1st inn. 2nd inn.
