Cricket 1889
AUG. 22, 1889. CBICKET: A WEEKLY EECORD OF THE GAME. 845 GLOUCESTERSHIRE v. NOTTS. After having a little the best of the first day’s play in their return match with the powerful combination representing Notts, begun on the Clifton College Ground on Thursday last, the Gloucestershire eleven had to put up with a de cisive defeat by ten wickets. 0 wing to the heavy rain on Wednesday, the ground at the outset was very soft, and the pitch was so much in favour of the bowlers that the game was com pleted before half-past three o’clock on Friday, by which time thirty-one wickets had fallen for an aggregate of 331 ruus. Mr. Grace was fortunate enough to win the toss, and with Mr. Radcliffe made a fairly good start, the score showing 37 when the former was out, having been in fortv-five minutes for his 22. Mr. Brain was out the second wicket at 63, but except Messrs. Townsend and Cranston, who were together forty minutes for seventeen, no one made any stand after the dismissal of Mr. Radcliffe. That batsman had been in one hour and forty minutes for his 38, an admirable 'exhibition of batting against first-olass bowling, and under any thing but favourable conditions. Attewell’s bowling was the chief cause of the small score of Gloucestershire. He took six wickets in his last sixteen overs at a cost of only twelve runs. The ground was more difficult on Thurs day afternoon when Notts went in, and though Shrewsbury and Flowers put on 22 for the first wicket, Mr. W . G. Grace and Woof bowled with such effect that the total was only 60 when the ninth batsman was out. The colt Butler and Richardson made a useful stand at the finish, and, as they added 27 runs, Notts were only 18 behind their opponents when the last wicket fell. Commencing their second innings on- Friday morning, Glouces tershire found the wicket very slow after a heavy dew, and run-getting was very difficult. Mr. W . G. Grace was in just under an hour and a half for his nine, and Mr. Radcliffe again proved to be best scorer with 11, though he tied this time with Woof. Mr. Cranston unfortu nately was not well enough to go in, and when the ninth wicket fell the innings was over for 60. Wanting 79 to win, Notts sent in Shrews bury and Flowers, and the former had only got one when he was let off at point. Flowers, when he had made 29, too, had a life at square- leg, and this double mistake proved irreparable. Afterwards, indeed, both players showed the greatest confidence, ana the runs were steadily knocked off without recourse to another batsman. Flowers’ all-round cricket was a very important factor in the result. He scored 53 for once out, and took in all eight wickets for 45, five in Gloucestershire’s first innings at a cost of only fifteen runs, a very fine performance. G LOUCESTERSHIRE. First Innings.
