Cricket 1889
810 CKICKET: A WEEKLY EECORD OF THE GAME. AUG. , 1889. expectations formed of him last season, Richardson had become a regular member of the County eleven, and this season he has fully justified his place in the team. His bowling in the match atjLord’s had much to do with the decisive defeat of Middlesex at the end of May, and his performance in taking seven of their ten wickets in the second innings in a great measure settled the issue. He bowled unchanged, too, throughout the two innings of Surrey at Nottingham, and a little later proved very effective against Lancashire and Sussex in turn, getting five wickets for 39 in the first innings of Lancashire, and sevenfor 42 in the first of Sussex. So far, indeed, this season, his average per wicket, though he has not done as much work as many of the leading bowlers, is the best in first-class matches, and on his recent form, his selection by the Surrey authorities to represent the Players against the Gentlemen at the Oval was well deserved. Riohardson is quite in the front rank of bowlers. He is medium pace with a very easy action, and can keep up his end without tiring. He is never easy to hit, from his consistently good length, and as he can break both ways without any very perceptible change in his delivery, he requires very care ful watching. When the ground helps him he is one of the most dangerous bowlers we have. He is, too, a good field. Like many of the Notts players, he can also take his own part at football, and the winter finds him busily engaged with the local Club. A thoroughly well conducted fellow, Richard son is very popular among all olasses of cricketers. Our portrait is from a photograph by Haw kins and Co., of 108, King’s Road, Brighton. H ants . The Hampshire eleven made a good fight in their return matoh with Sussex, begun at Southampton on Thursday, and the game had, owing to heavy rain on Saturday, to be left as it was on Friday night, when Hamp shire wanted 165 to win with eight wiokets to fall. Though Sussex, who won the toss, had a strongish side, they were fairly well got rid of for a total of 186. Eight of the eleven made double figures, but the highest scorer was Mr. MoCormick, with 80. Messrs. Forster and Lacey were seen to advantage in the early part of Hampshire’s innings, but the tail did even better, thanks chiefly to Smith, and the old Cantab, Mr. Gerds, the former of whom carried out his bat for an exceedingly well played innings of 72. Sussex were in a minority of 46 on the first hands, but when they went in again Bean, Tebay, Mr. New ham, and Humphreys all showed good cricket, and the total reached 242, of which extras fur nished as many as 31. Hampshire, with 197 to win, had, on Friday night, made 82 for the loss of two of their best batsmen, andas no play was possible on Saturday, the gamehad to be left in an unfinished state. Mr. Forster bowled well, as will be seen, for Hampshire, his seven wickets only costing 51 runs. Mr. Delme Radcliffe, who has been scoringheavily for Sherborne School this summer, played for Hampshire for the firstTtime in this matoh. S ussex . First Innings. Second Innings.
