The Yorkshire eleven secured their first victory of the season in important matches at Bradford, yesterday, when they defeated Gloucestershire with five wickets to spare. Gloucestershire had the same eleven which defeated Lancashire last week, while York shire tried Brown, of Driffield, who batted well against Leicestershire, at Bradford, and Driver, of Keighley, who kept wicket for Hunter. The ground at the outset was slow, but Gloucestershire did fairly well, thanks to the good cricket of Messrs. Brain and Crans ton in the early, and the free hitting of Messrs, Townsend and Croome in the latter part of the innings. Mr. Brain gave two chances in his score of 60, but Mr. Cranston’s 51 was free from mistakes. The latter was in two hours and twenty minutes for his runs, a most useful display of defensive cricket. Yorkshire had a little over an hour’s batting on Monday, and during this time lost three of their best batsmen, Ulyett, Hall and Lee, for 69 runs. Though the pitch was faster on Tuesday, the Yorkshiremen began badly, and three more wickets fell for an addition of 39 runs. Lord Hawke, Peel and Wainwright, however, gave a different complexion to the game, and chiefly through the fine hitting of Peel, Yorkshire were able to claim a lead of 13 runs on the first hands. Peel was batting for an hour and a half, and though he ought to have been stumped when he had got 24, his 63 was an excellent display of free cricket. Messrs. W . G. Grace and Radcliffe made 48 when Gloucestershire went in a second time, in forty minutes, but except Messrs. Towns end and Croome, none of the other batsmen got double figures. Mr. Grace was in two hours and twenty minutes for his 52, but it was not one of his best innings, though it must be stated that the ground helped the bowlers considerably. Peel and Wade each got four wickets, and the fielding, which has been very faulty at times this year, was ex ceedingly good all round. Yorkshire, who wanted 126 to win, had made 18 on Tues day night with one wicket down, yesterday got the requisite number for the loss of five batsmen, Hall carrying out his bat for 42.
