Cricket 1889

A u g . i , 1889. CRICKET: A WEEKLY EECORD OP THE GAME. 297 GENTLEMEN OP PHILADELPHIA. EIGHTH MATCH—v. GENTLEMEN OF KENT. The Philadelphians suffered their second reverse of the week on Friday at Town Mailing, when the Gentlemen of Kent with a strongish, but certainly not their strongest, side, de feated them with six wickets to spare. Lord Harris, winning the toss, put the Phila delphians in, and as the wicket was slow from recent rains, they did fairly well to make 177 runs, to which the captain was chief contri butor, with an extremely well-hit score of 51 not out. The Gentlemen of Kent lost five wickets for 89, but some free batting -by Hawkins enabled them to get a lead of 32 on the first innings. The Philadelphians made such a bad start in their second innings th at half their wickets were down for 34. The next two only added 25, but, as before, Newhall came to the rescue of his side, and again carried out his bat, this time scoring 39 by ex cellent cricket. The Gentlemen ofKent got the70 wanted to win for the loss of four batsmen, so that they won as above stated. The veteran Colonel Fellowes bowled with great success. In the two innings he took eight Philadelphian wickets at a cost of 93 runs. P h il a d e l p h ia n s . First Innings. Second Innings. G. S. GENTLEMEN OF HAMPSHIRE. The Philadelphians, after making a bad start at Southampton on Monday, played up pluckily, and won this match yesterday by two runs. The chief feature of the game was the fine performance of Mr. Patterson for the Americans. Carrying his bat through the first innings, he went in fifth wicket down in the second, and was again not out, having been in over three hours and a half for his 106, a remarkably fine display of cricket. In the match, as will be seen, he scored 141 with out being out. P h il a d e l p h ia n s . First Innings. Second Innings. G.L. Patterson, not out... 35 notout .........106 W. C.
