Cricket 1889

288 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. JtJLY 25, 1889. SUSSEX v. HAMPSHIRE. Though they made a good fight in the latter part of the game, the Hampshire eleven were unable to make up for their poor show at Brighton on Monday, and by 5.80 on Tuesday Sussex had won by an innings and 32 runs. Mainly through the good bowling of Jesse Hide, Hampshire, who went in first, were dis missed for 122, a total which at the end of the first day had been considerably exceeded by Sussex, who were 211 to the good with four wickets still to fall. Of the 333 made by the home team Mr. Newham had contributed 170, his highest score in a county match. He was at the wickets under three hours, and he hit all round in the most brilliant style without a mistake of any kind. His scorewas made up of eighteen fours, twelve threes, seventeen twos, and twenty-eight singles. Going in against a heavy deficit of 274, the Hampshire batsmen showed to better advantage. Messrs. Ben- craft and Forster put on 63 for the first wicket, but the best stand was by Dible and Young, who by hard hitting added 76 while they were together. Jesse Hide took twelve Hampshire wickets at a cost of 82 runs. Hampshire, we may add, had not its best eleven, with Messrs. F. E. Lacey and E. O. Powell away. Gibb, of East Grinstead, a left-hand medium pace bowler, played for Sussex for the first time in this match. H am psh ire . First Innings. Mr. R. Lancashire lost three wickets for 36, but a useful stand by A. Ward and Briggs, who added 37, practically settled the issue, and the latter carried out his bat for a finely hit forty- two. Barlow, who owing to an injury has been absent from several County matches, reappeared in the Lancashire eleven, and his all-round cricket was of great u»e. Briggs and Watson also bowled effectively, and on the other side, Pallett and Shilton shared the fourteen wickets which fell to the bowlers, the former taking six, the latter eight. LANCASHIRE. Lancashire, with a strong side, were only able to beat Warwickshire in this match, played at Birmingham on Monday and Tuesday, with five wickets to spare. Owing to recent rains, the ground was all in favour of the bowler, and the scoring was exceptionally low throughout. In all thirty-five wickets only realised 291 runs, and there were but three scorea over twenty. With 84 to win Lilley, b Briggs......... Mr. H. O. Whitby, Barlow, b Briggs ...
