The Essex eleven were seen to great advan tage at all points in this match, begun at Leyton on Thursday, and Leicestershire, who had not their full strength, were beaten early on the second afternoon by no less than an innings and 123 runs. Leicestershire, winning the toss, decided to go in, but the wicket was soft from the recent rains, and so the out-side had rather the best of the luck as it happened. The Essex eleven were in the field but two hours, and the only serious trouble they had was with the seventh wicket, Pougher and J. Warren, who put on 49 runs, making the stand of the innings. When Essex went in Messrs. Lucas and Owen put on 86 before a wicket ■fell* and at the end of the day their score showed 182 for two wickets, Mr. Owen not out 90. On Tuesday morning, Mr. Owen and Burns added 38 before the latter w’as out but the rest did little, and as the seven re maining wickets only added 76, the innings closed for 295. Mr. Owen, who had gone in first, carried his bat through, having made more than one half of the runs. He was missed twice, early in his innings, and again at 142. These were the only faults, though, in an otherwise irreproachable display of cricket. He was in altogether just over four hours and a half, and his score merits additional promi nence from the fact that it is the first hundred as yet made for Essex in county matches. Leicestershire had 171 to save an innings’ de feat, and they were quite equal to the task. They made indeed a sorry show, as Pickett’s fast bowling proved altogether too much for them, and in an hour and five minutes were all out for 51, to which total Pougher was again the chief contributor. Pickett, who has not done much for Essex during the last two years, bowled with re markable success. In the match altogether, he took eleven wickets at a cost of only 35 runs, an exceptionally good performance. Mr. C.J.Kortwright, of last year Tonbridge School eleven, made his first appearance in county cricket in this match. L eicf stersh ire . First Innings. Second Innings.
