Cricket 1889

JULY 18, 1889. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 265 exhibition of defensive cricket hig innings Was of the greatest value. The two Wards both fell to Anderson, and Eton were out at 6.25 for 152. No time was lost in clearing the ground, and as play had to be continued till 7.30 when McLaren and Wills went in at 6.40 there was just fifty minutes left to make the same number of runs. Hitting was, of course, the order of the day, and 28 had been got in fifteen minutes when McLaren was bowled. Studd, however, though able to finish the over, had twisted his leg in delivering the ball that dismissed McLaren, and had to give up the ball. Hoare, however, stayed while Wills quickly knocked off the remaining runs, and Harrow had won a quarter of an hour before time by nine wickets, the fifty runs having been got in thirty-seven minutes, a brilliant finish. Harrow were on the form of this match distinctly the better eleven. There was more variety in their bowling, and the batting was, on the whole, stronger. The wicket keeping of Gowans, who was only put into the eleven at the last moment as substitute for K. Butler, who injured his hand just before the match, too, was very creditable, and, as will be seen, he caught three batsmen in each innings. Jackson, the Harrow captain, was the best all-round cricketer in the two elevens, and, as he goes up to Cambridge in October, on his sohool form he should be of use to that University. Harrow has now won 27, Eton 26, of the 63 matches played, and the other ten have been drawn. On the first day 5,542 paid the 2s. 6d. charged for admission, and on the second 6,375. H arrow .
