Cricket 1889
JULY 18 1889. CKICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 263 MIDDLESEX v. LANCASHIRE. The Lancashire eleven, though without Mr, A. G. Steel and Barlow, proved too good for their opponents at all points, and the match, begun at Lord’s on Monday, was over by half past five o’clock on the following afternoon. Mr. A. J. Webbe, the captain, owing to a recent injury to his arm while playing tennis, was unable to represent Middlesex, but other wise the eleven was as strong as it well could be, including Messrs. Mordaunt, who made his first appearance, and Bryant, who had not kept wicket before this season. Considering the heavy rain of late the ground played fairly well, and Lancashire, winning the toss, made full use of first innings. They were at the wioket, in fact, nearly all the day, and as the last wicket did not fall until 6.40, Middlesex had only five minutes for batting. Rain fell during luncheon, but except for half an hour’s interruption afterwards, there was nothing to stop the game. The chief credit of Lanca shire’s total of 398 rested with the colt, A. Ward, Mr. Eccles, Sugg, and Briggs, who were responsible for 310 of thenumber. Mr. Eccles, who went in first, stayed until 187 had been scored. He was batting for just twohours and a half, and as far as we could see, gave no ohance. Sugg was credited with 63 out of 91 runs while he was in by good all-round hitting, and Briggs, though ha had two lives, let out in characteristic style, making 55 out of 64 runs in thirty-five minutes. The feature of the innings, though, was the judicious and steady cricket of Ward. He went in second wicket down with the score at 113, and carried out his bat after being at the wickets three hours and a half. He had contributed 114 out of 285 during his stay, and except that he ought to have been caught in the long fieldwhen he had got 37, we saw no chance. Altogether, it was a brilliant performance for a young player, and the value of his consistently careful batting cannot be overrated. Middlesex, who had overnight lost one batsman for three runs, only made a moderate start on Tuesday, and the fourth wicket fell at 59, of which Mr. Stoddart had contributed 33. Messrs.O’Brien andNepean, chiefly by the former’s vigorous hitting, added 48, but, except by the latter, no resistance was offered by the later batsmen, and the side were out for 145. Mr. Nepean, who went in third wicket down, was ninth out, having scored 34 out of 111 in an hour and a half, an excellent innings in every way. When Mid dlesex followed on in a minority of 253, Mr. Nepean again showed to great advantage, and Mr. Scott and he played such brilliant cricket that it looked as if a respectable total was in store. The two amateurs put on 71 runs in an hour, and as the score showed 122 when Mr. Nepean was out, the third wicket, things looked fairly well for Middlesex. After making 21 out of 30, however, Mr.O’Brienwas stumped, and Mr. Scott left at 162, the sixth wicket. Though, when he had made 4, but for a col lision between Sugg and Baker, he might have been caught in the long-field, his 75 was a remarkably good exhibition of free cricket, and against such bowling helped to some extent by the ground it was altogether a most credit able performance. At one time 160 was up with three wiokets down, but after this Briggs and Mold bowled with suoh success that only 86 were added and Lancashire were left with an easy win by an innings and 67 runs. Mold in the two innings of Middlesex took seven wiokets for 65 runs. L ancashire . Mr. A. N. Hornby, c Bryant, b Stoddart 17 Mr. J. Eccles, st Bryant, b Nepean... 78 Sueg.b Mordaunt ...63 A.
