Cricket 1889
JULY 4, 1889. CRICKET: A WEEKLY EECORD OF THE GAME. 287 GLOUCESTERSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE. Owingto the complete collapse of Gloucester shire in the second innings, this match, com menced on the Ashley Down Ground, at Bristol, on Monday last, was brought to a sudden termination, Lancashire winning with 95 runs to spare on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Radcliffe reappeared in the Gloucestershire eleven, while Gregg took the place of Roberts, who was suffering from a sprain received in the Yorkshire match, a severe loss to the side. Lancashire played the team which had defeated Surrey so decisively last week, except that Mr. Crosfield and Paul replaced Mr. A. G. Steel and F. Ward. Gloucestershire had first use of an excellent wicket, but the out- cricket of Lancashire was so good that in the first hour the brothers Grace could only make 47 runs. When 14 of these, too, had been secured, Pilling, in stopping one of Mold’s fast balls, unfortu nately split open the forefinger of his right hand, an accident that will most likely keep him off the field for a week or two. Messrs. W. G. Grace and Pullen both left with the score at 59, and with the exception of a capital contribution of 32 from Painter, the rest of the batting was so feeble that the innings finally closed for the moderate total of 145. This amount was almost reached by Lancashire in the two hours that remained for play on Monday, Mr. Hornby, as usual, playing in fearless style for 39. He was well backed up with a freely hit 48 from Sugg, and a good not out score of 37 from Mr. Eccles. The amateur increased his score on the following morning by excellent cricket to 62, the result of two hours and ten minutes’ batting. On his departure the weak Glouces tershire bowling came in for severe treatment, especially at the hands of Briggs and Pau>, and ultimately a respectable total of 327 was reached. Of this sum A. Ward accounted for 53, a remarkably patient innings. He was in three hours and a half, during which time he saw no less than seven of his colleagues come and go, without giving a chance of any kind himself. In a minority of 182runs, Gloucester shire made a very poor show. Though they started well with 50 for one wicket, the whole side were dismissed in two hours and ten minutes for the poor total of 87. The only one, indeed, to make any stand was Mr. W. G. Grace, who carried his bat throughout for 37. Lancashire won by an innings and 95 runs, a result greatly due to the effective bowling of Briggs, supported by brilliant all round fielding. At one time Briggs got three batsmen in four balls, and altogether he took seven wickets at the small cost of 22 G lo u cestersh ire . First Innings. W. G.
