Cricket 1889

JUNE 20,1889. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, 199 YORKSH IRE v. WARW ICKSHIRE. The Warwickshire eleven, without Pallett, Messrs. H. W . Bainbridge, L. C. Docker, and C. Wheeler, began their first match of the season with Yorkshire at Bramall Lane, Sheffield, on Monday, under such serious dis advantages, that the result could hardly, under ordinary circumstances, have been in doubt. Except for the absence of Lord Hawke and Preston, Yorkshire had its regular team, and they so completely outplayed their opponents as to be left with a decisive victory by an innings and 54 runs a little after four o’clock on the second afternoon. Warwickshire, who went in first, had made 83 for six wickets at luncheon time on Monday, but the remaining batsmen added but 7, Wainwright taking four wickets for only 3 runs. Thanks to some fine cricket by Lee and Hall, who put on 114 runs after Wainwright was out, Yorkshire made an excellent start, and, at the end of the first day, the total was 174 with only four batsmen out. Lee, who is in brilliant form just now, was in two hours for his 68, a sound and attractive display of batting without a fault. Hall, who was not out 57 over night, added 20 before he was out on Tuesday morning. He was in altogether four hours and ten minutes for his 77, which only included one life, amiss in the long-field, when he had got 46. War wickshire, 157 runs behind on the first hands, only made a slightly better show in their second innings, and though five batsmen got doubles, the tenth wicket fell at 103, Collisliaw being again the chief scorer. Wainwright aud Whitehead, as before, were the most successful bowlers. In the match the former took eight wickets for 33, the latter six for 34 runs. W a r w ic k s h ir e . First Innings. DUBLIN UN IVERSITY v. LANCASHIRE Mr. Hornby took a very strong side of Lan cashire to oppose the University at Dublin, on Monday, and with a favourable result, the county winning on Tuesday by an innings and 242 runs. Going in first, nine of the English team got double figures, and the total was 427 before the tenth wicket fell. The Irish batting was no stronger than the bowling. Watson, Briggs, and Mold, indeed, proved too much for them, and only the three first batsmen got double figures. Watson took ten wickets for 78, Briggs five for 41, and Mold four for 51 runs.
