Cricket 1889

194 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. JUNE 20, 1889. ball in the Inter University match at Lord’s, his all-round oricket was of great value to the side, and his second score of 58 out of 143 for three wickets was a most creditable perform ance. Mr. A. J. Webbe had, meanwhile, secured the promise of his services for Mid dlesex, and in the one match he played that summer, against Gloucestershire, at Clifton, he showed to the greatest advantage, scoring 71 and 29 besides securing five wickets, though at a rather heavy price. Beading interfered considerably with his cricket last year, and the slow grounds were so little to his taste that his lack of success with bat and ball was hardly surprising. That he was not alto gether out of form, however, was proved by his capital show against Notts at Trent Bridge, at the end of the season, when he got 59 not out, and took five wickets for 35 runs. So far this year Mr. Nepean’s batting has been of a really high order. He has generally scored well, and his show this week at Lord’s in making 108 for Middlesex against Surrey for once out was a performance of no ordinary merit. Mr. Nepean bats as well as bowls right- handed, and is a difficult wicket to get. He has great defence, but can hit freely when set, as he showed during the last few days at Lord’s. He bowls slow-round, and can break both ways, though he comes mostly from leg. Pitching the ball very high, on a hard wicket he is often remarkably effective, getting an immense amount of twist on at times. Our portrait is from a photograph by the London Stereoscopic Co.
