Cricket 1889

MAT 23, 1889. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 141 LEICESTERSH IRE v. LANCASHIRE. Except for the absence of Mr. A. G. Steel, who is not a regular member of the eleven, Lancashire put its full strength into the field at Leicester on Monday to oppose Leices tershire. Unfortunately, on the other hand, Mr. Arnall Thompson, the captain of the home county, was absent, and his bowling was certainly missed. Owing to the recent rains, the ground was from the first all against the batsmen, and at the end of the first day seventeen wickets had fallen for an aggregate of 181 runs. Mr. Marriott played good cricket, but except Warren and Wheeler, no one else reached double figures for Leices tershire, and Watson bowled unchanged. Mr. Hornby and Barlow made a good start for Lancashire, and the former was responsible for 32 of 47 got when he was out. Rylott, though, kept such a good length that none of the other batsmen except Barlow and Pilling made anything of a stay, and the total after all only reached 125. Barlow carried his bat through the innings. He was batting alto gether for three hours and forty minutes for his 29 not out, an invaluable display of unwearying patience. The wicket on Tuesday, under the influence of the sun, was even more difficult than on the first day, and Briggs and Watson proved altogether too much for the Leicester shire batsmen. This time Briggs was the more successful, and he was credited with eight of the ten wickets, and at a cost of only twenty-four runs, ten of which were got by Mr. De Trafford from one over. Though, in the end, Lancashire had only ten runs to make to win, one batsman (Sugg) had to go before this number was got, so that Leicestershire were beaten by nine wickets. Rylott, it will be seen, bowled with great success for Leices tershire, and Pougher, though he has not been well lately, had creditable figures. Hallam, a medium pace bowler, Marshall and Bowler were tried iu the Leicestershire eleven in this match for the first time. L e ic e st e r sh ir e . First Innings. Mr. C. The Marylebone Club was only able to send a very weak eleven to Cambridge on Monday last to oppose the University, and the latter had the best of the game at every point. Mr. Ford, the captain, was unable to play for Cambridge, but, as it happened, he was not wanted and Marylebone had to put up with a decisive defeat by an innings and ten runs. Owing to the rain, the wicket at the outset was slow, and the only feature of the first innings of M.C.C. was the stand of Mr. Wright and Hearne, who added 48 for the third wicket. When Cambridge went in the first wicket fell at 20, but the two old Etonians, Messrs. Foley and Gosling, offered a deter mined resistance to the Marylebone bowlers, and the pair by excellent cricket added 77 before the former was out. When play com menced on Tuesday the University were nine runs to the good with seven wickets to fall, and chiefly through the free hitting of Mr. Woods, at the close, this lead was increased to 71 before the innings closed. Going in a second time, M.C.C. were seen to even worse advantage than on the first day, and Messrs. De Little and Woods, who bowled unchanged, succeeded in dismissing the eleven for a small total of 61. Mr. De Little’s bowling was the feature of the match. In the two innings of M.C.C. he was credited with eleven wickets at an average of less than 5 runs. M.C.O. and G round . First Inning*. W. H. Leese, b Woods ... 3 G. G.
