: MA'i %; K89. CRICKET- A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 99 CRICKET IN AU§TRAE t &. (From our Sydney Correspondent). M arch 28. On Saturday last the rain stopped play amongst all but the- most enthusiastic, and instead of a long letter, I am reduced to the most meagre items. Indeed cricket was never at so low an ebb as it is now in this colony. Our senior clubs are without support, and secretaries and treasurers hardly know where to find men and money. This is not so in one or two cases, which it would seem in vidious to mention. Suffice it that, though we can put a strong eleven into the field, yet we cannot sustain the interest. Junior clubs have their armies of what are known as “ bar- rackers,” who follow and howl for tlieir side, and, in one or two cases, have been known to fight the umpires, but this is hardly cricket. However, April is upon us, the astronomers promise us plenty of rain, so cricket is nearly at an end for the season. In one of my earlier letters, I alluded to a young Newington College boy, named Moul ton, who then achieved great success as a bowler. The other day in a match against the “ old boys ” he took ten wickets for 8 runs. His analysis reads 70 balls, 8 runs, 6 maidens, ten wickets. This youngster will train on, if his business arrangements permit when he leaves school. The match between Melbourne and South Melbourne for the Metropolitan Challenge Cup has advanced another stage. I gave tho figures up to the second innings of M.C.C., which eventually closed for 303—Mcllwraith 132, Swift 59, Bruce 54. The M.C.C. total for the two innings was 571, so South has 84 to get to win the match. Morpeth (N.S.W.) played Singleton la't week, and the former scored 462, Singleton being dismissed for 59.
