Cricket 1888
2 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. JAN. 26, 1 Gloucestershire, in August, in the opening match of the Cheltenham Week, and, indeed, there were few better exhibitions of batting during a month remarkable for heavy scoring. He made 113 out of 228 got while he was at the wickets in three hours and ten minutes, and there was nothing like a flaw in his innings, with the exception of a difficult one-handed catch after he had reached his hundred. Altogether his batting was one of the most noteworthy features of the L an cashire season. He was not at the head of the averages, it is true, but, considering that he usually went in early, and that he only had the advantage of one not out in his nineteen innings, his figures will bear very favourable comparison with those of Robinson and Sugg, who were both placed ahead of him. In any case, he could boast the double distinction of the highest aggregate as well as the highest individual score for Lancashire, and his average of 31 was abundant proof of his great ability. On his form of 1887 there are indeed not many better amateur batsmen at the present time, certainly none who give promise of a more successful future than Mr. Eccles. He plays thoroughly sound cricket, gets well over the ball, and, watching it carefully, is rarely seen to disadvantage, whatever may be the state of the pitch. His style, too, is of the best; and, in addition to good defence, he scores fast when settled down, getting runs well on both sides of the wicket. He is, too, a smart field. Mr. Eccles is a cotton manufacturer, residing at Ashton-on-Ribble, near Preston. Our portrait is from a photograph by Messrs. Hawkins and Co,, of 108, King’s Road’ Brighton. ___________________________ CRICKET IN CALCUTTA. CALCUTTA CLUB v. D E R B Y SH IR E REGIMENT. Played at Calcutta on December 3. C alcutta . T. P. W e had frequently during last summer to call attention to the long scores made by Mr. C. J. Fox for the Crystal Palace Club. His batting throughout the season was so success ful that it will be of interest to C rick et - readers to have a full list of his performances. In all it will be seen he took part in 57innings, including nine not-outs. His highest score was 261 not out for Crystal Palace v. Charlton Park, and he was also credited with another innings of 200, making 243 not out v. Hamp stead a month before. In addition he scored over a hundred four times. Mr. Fox, who is an Old Westminster, played for Surrey in 1876, in which year he was captain of the Westminster School eleven. Absenee for several years in In d ia prevented his c o n tin u ance in first-class cricket.
