BENALLA TWENTY-TWO. aving enjoyed themselves immensely in Tasmania, the * lislimen returned to Victoria on February 2, where they arranged to play a match before going- to Sydney, ir oppononts were Twenty-two of Benalla, a township ;h of Melbourne, which eight years ago was near tho 1 centre of tho murderous Kelly gang of bushrangers, re are some good players at Benalla, but the result of match did not come np to their expectations. There e about 1,000 people present. The local team won tho i, and elected to go to the wickets. The bow ling, how- r, was too good for them, and they wero all disposed of 126 runs. Dr. Aines 3 (25) and Byass (2 r) wed nice cricket for their runs, and K. Jarvis and Hayrncs (12) wero the only other ible figures. Beaumont bowled splendidly, and camo out with the fine average of 14 for 51. Tho irishmen went in for some lively hitting, Attewell, ddart, and O’Brien especially being to the fore. The re at the close of the day was 191 for seven wickets, 3rien remaining not out with 72 to his credit. )n the second day (February 3) there was a very good endance when the Englishmen resumed their places at wickets. O ’Brien brought his score to 88 , when ho was tyled. The remainder of the team all reachod doubles, ’ the score was 271 when the last wicket fell. In their ond attempt the local team fared worse than in the first 'incra, the small total of 1)2 being the result of their pTay. (19) and O ’Hanlon (11) wore the only players who ild do anything with the bowling. Beaumont, Peel, and tewell all got good averages, the latter taking four for 5. ® teamremained at Benalla for two or three days, ending their time in fishing and shooting excursions.
