Cricket 1888
431 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. NOV. 1, 1888. hardly as reliable as he used to be, and though Turner, Ferris, Jarvis, Edwards, and latterly Ly.ons did well with the bat, it could not really, we think, be urged that it was anything but a m oderate side, though here again conspicuous m ention should be m ade of the great loss occasioned by Jones’ absence. T he fielding, though at times uneven, was generally good, and Blackham ’s w icket-keeping was very often quite up to his best form of old, than which there cannot be higher praise. M cDonnell’s captaincy contributed in no small degree to the success of the team, and it is gratifying to be able to state that on as well as oil the cricket field a thoroughly good and sportsmanlike spirit pervaded the team. The follow ing table, taken from the Sydney Mail and showing how the various Australian Elevens have fared in England, will prove a fitting conclusion to our brief analysis of the team now rcturninghom e. B elow will be found the scores of the last five m atches played by the Irish Gentlem en in the States. We regret that we are not able to include scores o f the fixtures at Pitts burgh on Sept. 6 and 7, and B altim ore on Sept. 8 and 10, as our application to the Cap tain of the team has, so far, not proved suc cessful. Both of the games were drawn, we m ay add, the Irishnen m aking in the form er 193 against 97 and 2 for two wickets by the Fifteen of Pittsburgh, and 173 for eight wickets to an innings of 119 by the Sixteen of Baltim ore.
