Cricket 1888
SEPT. 20, 1888. ORIOKET: A WEEKLY REOOBD OF THE GAME. 431 SOUTH OF ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIANS. Though, in point of interest, the second fixture of the Hastings festival could not bear comparison with its predecessor, there was some good cricket on the first three days of this week. The spectators, too, were favoured in witnessing an excellent display of batting by the Australians, who were seen to much better advantage than they have been for some time. McDonnell, who won the toss for the Australians, went in on Monday morning with his usual partner, Bannerman. The wicket wasvery fast, and, chiefly through McDonnell’s hitting, runs came quickly. After losing Ban nerman at 35, the Captain was well caught at 77, of which he had made 44 with his usual vigour. Bonnor, who has been very unsuccessful of late, again failed, but Trott and Lyons proved difHoult to dislodge, and gave the Southern bowlers serious trouble. Both batsmen played the best cricket, and the total had been raised from 82 to 169 when Lohmann bowled Trott. The outgoing batsman was missed at the wicket when he had made six, but otherwise his play was irreproachable. Lyons con tinued to bat freely and well until his score had reached 84, when he was cleverly taken at short slip. He was only in for an hour and fifty minutes, and his hitting all round was marked by great power and judgment. His success after his failures during the early part of the tour will be very popular. He was heartily, and deservedly, applauded. Jarvis and Worrall, too, hit freely, and the first day ended with the completion of the Australian innings for 291. Opening their innings on Tuesday morning, the South made a very bad start, 25 being the score with Messrs. Grace, Newham and Read all out. Mr. Key and Abel, by excellent cricket, added 69, and later on Mr. Smith hit in fine style, his 44 including a drive out of the ground from Trott for six. The innings, though, only reached 174, and the Southerners had thus to follow on in a minority of 117. This time Mr. Grace was in his best vein for run-getting, and he had got 53 by brilliant cricket when he fell, the second wicket down, at 66. After his retirement, too, things went all in favour of the Australians, and when the seventh wicket fell one run was still wanted to save the innings. At this period, however, the two local players, Messrs. Sutthery and Pigg, came to the rescue of their side, and, though the light was bad, the latter hit so freely that at the end of the day he was not out 38, with the total 169 for nine wickets. Ten minutes yesterday sufficed to bring the innings to a close, Mr. Pigg carrying out his bat for a well- got 38. This left the Australians with only 59 to win, and though McDonnell was well caught and bowled at 10, Bannerman and Trott scored so quickly that the runs were got in forty-five minutes, the Australians thus claiming an easy victory with nine wickets to spare.
