Cricket 1888

86 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. MAR. 29, 1888. that the wholesale century-getter (W.G.G.) never did lay hold of him for the 100 on any occasion that he met him, although the ‘‘ back- snatcher ” can recount how that he once started him backthe firstball; and, asanhistorical closer of my old friend John’scareer in countymatches —that superb timist and spanking off hitter, Mr. I. D . Walker, dropped on to him , knocked him off, and exercised Herts to the tune of 137 at Lords’ in 1881, in the last county match that he ever bowled. I have often thought that had Hughes been about in these days of county rivalry and big gates, what a many golden loadstones would be at work to tempt him to migrate. For Herts—although, I can vouch, never short of first-class cricketers—yet lan guishes for the fixed county ground with the accompanying gate. It is to be hoped that, like her„; neighbour Essex, some generous patron may yet be found to give the needed start. Long, long may the village greens, the commons, and parks, the nurseries of cricket, be found in “ Merrie E n g l a n d a s also standing clubs; with rovers like I Zingari, Free Foresters, Incogniti, &c., which have done more to spread the game than some give crsdit for. But ’tis the gate that develops county cricket and that will keep the ball rolling. And my best wishes are that the new gate, about to be hung in the West, may be pro ductive of “ success in every sense of that word—and thus, in the future, be the means of upholding the fame of Gloucester, which the marvellous skill of the “ Graces ” has built up and placed in a foremost rank amongst the cricket counties. There was a good attendance of members notwithstanding the inclement weather. Dr. Alfred Waddilove, the president, who, by-the-bye, has, we are informed, just entered his 82ndyear, was unable to preside, and the duty of chairman was undertaken by the senior vice-president, Mr. H. W . Price. The Chairman reminded the meeting that the club had just entered on the 30th year of its existence, and from the report presented to the members it appears to be as flourishing as ever. Thirty-four matches were played last season, of which 15 were won and 15 were lost, 4 being drawn. The balance-sheet showed a balance of about £30 in excess of the ordinary expendi ture. The Secretary stated that the ground was in better order than at any previous time. The following list of matches for 1888 was read. F ixtures for 1688. May 9—at Richm ond, v.
