Cricket 1888
S EPT. 6, 1888. ORICJKETi A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 899 YORKSHIRE v. MARYLEBONE CLUB AND GROUND. After three days of interesting crioket, this match, begun at Scarborough on Monday last, ended yesterday evening in a victory for Yorkshire by 60 runs. Heavy rain on Saturday and Sunday had made the wicket very wet when the time arrived for a com mencement, and the choice of innings was consequently a matter of no small im portance. Fortune favouring the Yorkshire captain, the Marylebone eleven, which was not very strong in bowling, had to take the field. Play did not commence until 1.30, and between this hour and six o’clock, seven of the County’s wickets fell for an aggregate of 179. The chief contributors to this creditable total were Hall, Lee, Mr. Leadbeater, of the Scarborough Club, and Wade. Hall, though he ought to have been caught at square-leg when he had got 28, was of the greatest value to the side, and on this occasion he showed a little more freedom than is his wont. Lee was stupidly run out after getting 38 by excellent crioket, and Wade, who was not dismissed until the second morning, hit well for his thirty-four. Before the start an arrangement had been made that, if necessary, a new wioket should be pitched after the first innings, and this was used on the second day after the tenth wicket of Yorkshire had fallen. Messrs. Grace and Kemp put on thirty runs for the first wicket of M.C.O., but after this, Peel and Preston carried all before them for a time, and when the seventh batsman was out only 23' had been added. The tail though did its duty bravely, and thanks to Gunn, Mr.Forster and Mr. Thornton, who hit with much of his old vigour for his 48 not out, the follow was not only saved, but Marylebone finished only fifty-two to the bad. The tenth wicket added 63, of which Aleo Hearne, who played most carefully, leaving the run-getting to Mr. Thornton, only contributed six. In their second innings Yorkshire on Tuesday night, when play ceased, had scored 9 for the loss of one batsman (Lord Hawke), so that when play was resumed yesterday, they were 61 on, with nine wickets to go down. Lee and Hall, as in the first innings, were seen to advan tage, but except D. Hunter, a brother of the old Yorkshire stumper, who also keeps wicket, no one did much, and the innings closed at 3.40 for 100. Left with 153 to win, and only two hours still for play, Marylebone made a bad start, Mr. Grace being caught at mid-on without a run. This failure proved the fore-runner of others, and as Messrs. Thornton and O’Brien, who together con tributed more than one-half of the total, alone made any stand against Preston, the end soon came, Yorkshire claiming a well deserved victory. Preston’s bowling at the finish was remarkable. He took nine of the ten Marylebone wickets, and at a cost of only 28 runs. Y o r k s h ir e . First Innings. Lord Hawke, h w, b A.
