Rain interfered materially with the return match between these counties, begun at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Thursday last, and the game was unfinished on Saturday evening. No play took place on Friday, and during the course of the other two days, thirty-two wickets fell for an aggregate of 254 runs, an average of under 8 runs. Owing to a heavy downpour on Thursday morning, the game was not commenced until 12.35, and so slow was the play that only 116 runs were scored during the day. Mr. Hornby, who opened the batting with Lancashire, hit in his best form, and scored 50 of the first 54 runs, a success which will be very popular with the public after his recent ill-luck. After he left, though, the play became most uninteresting, and Barlow was actually in three hours and twenty-five minutes for 17 runs, a display which, however useful under the circum stances, could not fail to weary the spectators. He was forty minutes at the wickets before he made a run, and at the end of an hour and twenty-five minuteshad only three singles to his credit. The wicket, as was onlv to be ex pected after Friday’s rain, assisted the bowlers on Saturday, and Notts, who hadlost one wicket bn Thursday night for 14, completed their innings for 73, half of which were contributed by Flowers and Attewell. The second innings of Lancashire, who had a lead of 29 runs, wa» only noteworthy for the batting of Baker and Barlow. The two professionals wererespon* sible for 41 of 62 from the bat, and Barlow’s play was on a par with his previous exhibition, his score of 14 occupying him two hours ana a quarter. Only forty-five minutes remained for play when Notts went in a second time with 104 to win, and after two batsmen had been dismissed for 15, rain put an end to the game, Notts still wanting 89 to claim the victory with eight wickets in hand. Flowers, Richardson and Attewell on the one side and Briggs and Watson on the other as will be seen bowled effectively. Lancashire, it may be added, was without Messrs. J. Eccles, G| Jowett, A. G. and E. E. Steel.
