Cricket 1888
8 6 6 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF. JTHE GAME. AUG. 23, 1688 K E N T v. M ID D L E S E X . The Kent eleven got such a great advantage on M onday at Gravesend, at the comm ence ment of this match, that their opponents never had a real chance afterwards, and just after half-past three o’clock on the follow ing after noon, the game ended in an easy victory for K ent by an innings and 4L runs. Going in first, the hom e team were at the wickets for three hours and three-quarters, during which tim e they realised a respectable total of 203. The chief credit of this performance rested in the earlier part of the innings with Mr. Patter son, Mr. F ox and Lord Harris, and later in w ith W alter W right and W ootton. The last named, who had been left out of several of the K ent fixtures recently, played very care fully, and after helping W right to add 41 for the ninth wicket, carried out his bat. M iddle sex, who were without Messrs. T. C. O ’Brien and Vernon, made a very bad show when they went in, and before the end of the first day had lost seven of the best wickets for 48, of w hich Mr. Ford contributed one-half. Heavy rain fell during M onday night, and taking advantage o f the easy ground early on the following m orning Mr. de Paravicini hit freely, so that the score was doubled by the three remaining wickets. Follow ing on in a m inority of 105, M iddlesex, thanks to the good cricket of Messrs. W ebbe and Scott, made a better start, and at luncheon tim e the score was 36 with only one batsman out. A fter the interval, though, as the ground dried under the hot sun, W ootton and A lec Hearne carried everything before them , and the innings closed for an addition of only 18 runs. W ootton thoroughly justified his reappearance in the Kent eleven by his excellent all-round cricket. In the second innings of Middlesex he took five wickets, and altogether nine wickets for 65 runs. Mr. J. C. L. Shenton, of Guy’s H ospital, made his first appearance for M iddlesex in this m atch. Mr. W . Rashleigh, c Bryant,bRobertson 7 F. Hearne, c Robert son, b B urton.......... 8 Mr. W. H.
