Cricket 1888
858 CRIOKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. AUG. 23, 1888. T H IR T Y -F IR S T M A TCH .—y. GLO U CE S T E R S H IR E . Though they had to play without their best bowler, W oof, owing to illness, the Glouces- ershire eleven had all the best of their return m atch w ith the Australians begun at Chelten ham on Monday, and follow ed up their success at C lifton in the first fixture with a second victory, having when the gam e ended yesterday eight wickets in hand. Though M cDonnell, who won the toss, helped to put on 48 runs for the Australians before a wicket fell, no one after his dism issal w ith the exception of Jarvis offered any serious opposition to the bowling of Roberts and Mr.Peake, and the innings only reached 118. Roberts, who was left out of the Gloucestershire eleven in the m atch against Yorkshire last week, was very successful, taking six of the ten wickets for 51 runs. R ain pre vented Gloucestershire going in to bat on M onday, but on the follow ing m orning the two Graces and Mr. Radcliffe made such a good start that 166 was up w ith only two wickets down. A t this figure Mr. W . G. Grace, who had played another very fine inn ings of 92, was bowled, and as the ground had begun to help the bowlers, Turner and Ferris proved so successful that the remaining bats m en only added 43. M r. W . G. Grace was in just over three hours for his 92, and except for a let off in the country when he had got 46 there was no fault. Going in a second tim e 91 to the bad the Australians had scored 60 for the loss of three of their best batsmen at the end of the second day, and this num ber w a 3 increased to 151 yesterday before the tenth wicket fell. The chief feature of the innings was the batting of Bannerman and Edwards, who both played excellent cricket, contributing 82 of a total of 148 from the bat. Gloucestershire had only 61 to get to win when they went in a second tim e yesterday afternoon, and the task caused them little trouble, only tw o bats men being dismissed before the winning hit was made.
