This match was played at Gorhambury, by invitation of the Earl of Verulam , on A ug. 1, between elevens selected by the E arl of Bess borough and M r. H. E. Crawley. Mr. Crawley played with and captained his own side, but Lord Bessborough pleaded superannuation and appointed Mr. Kem p (of Cambridge fame) to act for him as “ clever counsellor and silly point ” The day was very fine but the ground heavy, and the scoring was consequently very slow, but some very good play was shown on both sides, particularly by B ojer (of the W in chester eleven), Eaton and Bonham Carter (whose total of runs would have been much larger if his height had been equal to his skill), and on the other side by W ills, Butler, Napier, and Chaplin. The best bowling was by M itchell-Innes, Bonham-Carter, and B ojer for Herts, and by Pope (who perform ed the hat trick), and by the young bowler who Peebled out four men for very few runs. There was a large attendance of visitors, who were wel com ed by the E arl of Verulam and his family, and all who were present, high and low , rich and poor, old and young, joined in thanks for a truly happy day.
