SU R R E Y . The Yorkshiremen, in losing the toss, had all the worst of the luck in their return match w ith Surrey, begun on the ground of the Bradford Club, on M onday, and the southern shire were able, in consequence, to claim a very easy victory. Surrey, w inning the toss, went in first, and, though Messrs. Shuter and W . W . Read failed, had succeeded in scoring 326 for the loss of only half their wickets when play ceased on the first day. The m erit of this performance rested w ith four batsmen, Abel, Mr. Bowden, Maurice R ead, and Mr. K,ey. Abel, who gave no chance in his score of 60, stayed until the total was 167, but the stand of the day was while Read and Mr. Key were partners. B oth batsmen hit finely, and the form er’s 109, which contained no chance till he had got 66, was an exceptionally good display of vigorous cricket, on which everyone will congratulate him after a run of bad luck. Owing to heavy rain during the night, play could not be resumed on Tuesday m orning till half-past twelve o’clock, and on the wet turf the bowlers were seen to such disadvantage that the not outs, Mr. K ey 80 and Lohm ann 23, both scored fast. The latter, who was in only an hour and fifty minutes, in par ticular hit in brilliant style, and both were out at the same total (417), Lohm ann having added 57 while his partner was making 28. Mr. Key should have been stumped when he got seven, but he hit well all-round when occasion offered and altogether his 108 was deserving of high praise. Some loose fielding marked the close of the Surrey innings, and 38 were added by the last three wickets, of which W ood contributed not out 27. Yorkshire had to bat on Tuesday afternoon under the double disadvantage of a drying wicket and a bad light, and when rain stopped play at 5.35 seven of their wickets had fallen for only 79 runs. Twenty-two runs were added by the remaining batsmen yesterday m orning, and, as they were 354 runs behind, the Yorkshiremen followed on at 12.15, with small hope of being able to save the match. U lyett’s hitting gave a m omentary interest to the game, and he was seen to the very best advantage in the attain ment of his score of 51. W hen he was out the total was 89 for four wickets, and, as no one afterwards made a lengthy stand, the end soon came, Surrey being left at 3.45 with a victory by an innings and 228 rups. Lohm ann’s bowling was again one of the principal factors in Surrey’s success. Altogether it will be seen he took 13 Yorkshire wickets for 119 runs. As in addition he scorfed 80, the value of his all-round cricket to the side can be appreciated. S u r r e y . Mr. J.
