Cricket 1888
850 CEICKET-s WEEKLY BECOEl) OF /THE GAME. a u g . 16,1888 D E R B Y SH IR E y. YO RK SH IR E . Follow ing up the excellent form they showed against M iddlesex at the end of last week, the Derbyshire eleven gained a well-deserved victory in their return m atch with Yorkshire, played at Derby on M onday and Tuesday. The Yorkshirem en, who were w ithout Peel and U lyett, engaged with England against Australia at the Oval, had the advantage of going in first, but only three of the eleven were able to get double figures, and at the end of an innings Derbyshire had a lead of fourteen runs. Hulm e, who had bow led with great success in Yorkshire’s first innings, again proved very effective when they went in a second tim e, and though 60 was up with but one batsman (Hall) out, the total only reached 96. D erbyshire were thus left w ith 83 to win, and these were got for the loss of only three of the eleven, a result due to the excellent batting of Mr. W righ t and Chatterton at the finish. Derbyshire thus won w ith seven wickets to spare, and the news of this credit able win, after a m ost disheartening series of everses, w ill be received w ith the greatest ,atisfaction by cricketers everywhere. H ulm e’s owling was the chief factor in their success, n Yorkshire’s two innings, as w ill be seen, he ecured fifteen wickets for an average of under five runs. Y o r k s h ir e . First Innings.
