Cricket 1888
ST'AUG. 16, 1888. CEICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 347 cricket can be proved by the fact that he got his sixty-tw o not out in fifty-five minutes without anything like a mistake. Turner, who had been left out of the Gloucestershire m atch through indisposition, took six wickets, but he did not seem to be at all well and his figures were not as good as usual. W ith a lead of 237 on the first innings, England’s chances were particularly hopeful, and when the Australian captain,, after making 32 out of 34, was bowled off his leg by a fast ball from Peel they were m aterially improved. Trott, too, came in only to be cleverly stumped, and when the Surrey wicket-keeper caught Bonnor soon afterwards, the three most dangerous batsmen on the side were gone. A clever catch at point which got rid of Edwards brought the end closer, and when W ood threw Ferris out very smartly, five wickets were down for 62. Bannermann, after being in an hour and twenty-five minutes for five, played on a run later, and though Turner gave a little interest to the game the result was soon placed beyond a doubt. W hen at last the tenth w icket fell for 100 England was left with a m ost decisive victory by an innings and 137 runs. Barnes and Peel bowled exceedingly well, and the form er’s figures were particularly note w orthy. The spectators were highly pleased at the easy w in of the Englishm en, and hun dreds assembled in front of the pavilion, a large number remaining some time to greet the m ore successful players. On Tuesday 16,207 passed through the turnstiles, so that the shilling was paid by 30,957 persons in the tw o days, giving a gross sum of £1,647 17s. taken at the gates. A u s t r a l ia .
