Cricket 1888

342 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF TH& GAME. AUG. 16, 1888. L E IC E S T E R SH IR E v. E SS E X . The Leicestershire S even added another to their many successes of the year at Leicester on Tuesday, when they beat Essex, after a m ost exciting finish, by four runs. T he hom e team, who had the advantage of first innings, had a useful lead of 68 when they went in a second tim e, and this stood them in good stead. E ssex at the comm encem ent of the fourth innings wanted 139 to win, and, as the earlier batsmen failed, half the wiokets were down for only 54 runs. Messrs. H oward Fow ler and Burrell made a useful stand for the sixth wicket, and their addition of 62 runs gave the game a turn in favour of E ssex. W hen Messrs. Burrell and G. Fowler were together only nine were wanted, with three wickets in hand, but the rest were dismissed for five, so that Leicestershire won in brilliant style. The victory was in a great measure due to R ylott’s effective bowling at the close. In the second innings of E ssex he bow led 162 balls for 37 runs and six wickets. L e ic e ster s h ir e .
