Cricket 1888

888 CEICKEXj A WEEKLY KECOBD OF THE GAME, AUG. 16, 1888 has been in favour of the bowlers. Mr. Moses is, moreover, not only of*use as a batsman, being a splendid out field in addition. He is a partner in the well-known firm of Messrs. A. Thompson & Co., wine merchants, in Sydney. Unassuming in manner and with out anything like pretence, there is no more popular cricketer in the Australian Colonies. SUSSEX v. LANCASHIRE. The Lancashire Eleven, unsuccessful in their two matches against Surrey and Kent, and weakened still further by the absence of Briggs and Sugg, who were playing for Eng land against Australia at the Oval, had to endure another defeat in this match, played at Brighton on Monday and Tuesday last. Though the wicket was in favour of run- getting, Lancashire, who went in first, made a poor show, and were all out for 111, of which no less than 56 were made by the last two batsmen, Yates and Pilling. Going in a second time in a minority of 41 runs, they fared better, due chiefly to the good cricket of Mr. Ecoles, and the free hitting of Messrs. Taylor and Crosfield. Mr. Taylor was the principal contributor, and though he had two lives in the attainment of his 40, it was, nonethe less, an innings of great value. At the close Sussex had 131to win, and Mr. Gresson helped Quaife to knock off 34 before he was out lbw. Mr. Newham and Quaife then became partners, and when the former got in runs came at a great pace, both, in spite of frequent changes of bowling, playing fine cricket. The two batsmen quickly placed the issue beyond doubt, crediting Sussex with a well-deserved victory—its first of the season in important County matches—by nine wiokets. L a n c a sh ir e .
