Cricket 1888

Am. 9,1888. CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 325 very h ig h m erit. H e d id n o t seem to be troubled by tne bow ling at all, and his batting was m arked by great ju d g m e n t as w ell as freedom . In a m in o rity of 88, Lancashire began th e ir second in n in g s at five o’clock, and th an k s to Sugg and B arlow the to ta l was thirty-s^x w hen the th ird batsm an was dism issed. A fter this, tho ug h, L o h m a n n and B e a u m o n t bowled w ith irresistible effect, and th e n in th w icket fell for an a d d itio n of only tw o runs. T hough ju s t at the close W a tso n relieved the gam e by some vigorous h ittin g , the end soon cam e, and w hen the te n th w icket fell a t 63 Surrey were left w ith a decisive viotory by an innings and 25 runs. B eaum o n t and L o h m a n n shared the ten w ickets equally, a nd the form er had the better analysis, his five— all clean bow led— only costing 19 runs. In the m atch altogether L o h m a n n took thirte en w ickets a t an average of ju s t under four runs, a n d of the thirteen as m a u y as ten were bowled. H is bow ling, w ith th a t of B eaum ont, and the ba ttin g of Messrs. R ead, K ey, and S huter were the chief contri butories to the b rillia n t victory of Surrey. I t is w orthy of rem ark th a t the tim e of actual play was about five hours, a nd d u rin g this period th irty w ickets fell for an aggregate of 221 runs. L ancashire . First Innings. A fter a m ost exciting finish, the K ent eleven succeeded in defeating th e ir n eigh bours of Sussex for the second tim e this season at T onbridge on F riday last. B oth counties were w ell represented, and the cricket throug hout the tw o days was conse que n tly fu ll of interest. The heavy ra in of the previous day prevented a com m encem ent u n til tw enty m in ute s to four o ’clock on T hursday afternoon, and w hen play d id begin, w ith the gro und dryin g under the hot sun, the bowlers h a d a good tim e of it. Sussex, w in n in g the toss, decided to go in first, but W rig h t a nd M artin bowled so well, th a t the side wero out in an ho u r and a half, M r. G a ^ s o n m a k in g twenty-two out of 43 from the bat, an adm irable in nin g s. K en t lost three of their best batsm en for only four runs, b u t Messrs. W ilso n and M a rc h a n t im proved m atters a little , a nd at the end of the day h a lf the wickets were dow n for thirty-three. The hom e team were then eighteen runs be hind w ith ha lf th e ir w ickets in han d, b u t thanks to some good cricket by Alec. Hearne, 70 runs were added on F rid a y m orning, g iv ing th e m a useful lead of fifty-two runs. W rig h t was in an hou r and a quarter for his score of eight n o t out. W h e n Sussex w ent in a second tim e M r. Gresson was again seen to advantage, and, as before, he was the highest scorer. T he bow ling of Alec. H earne and M a rtin, though, proved too m u c h for the Sussex batsm en generally, and the ten th w icket fell for 96. H earne’s six w ickets cost 47, M a rtin ’s four 24 runs, and in the m atch altogether the la tte r took ten w ickets for an average of exactly five runs. A t the finish K e n t h a d only 45 to w in, a nd w hen M r. F ox a nd George H earne were together, the total was 41 w ith only four batsm en out. A n easy w in seemed then a certainty, b u t some extraordinary bow ling by T ate introduced some quite unexpected excitem ent, and K ent, after a ll, only ju s t pulled through. Tate, indeed, clean bowled the next five bats m en, a nd w hen M a rtin, the last m a n , joined M r. K em p, tw o more were still w anted to w in . A sharp ru n to the form er m ade the gam e a tie, a nd another single, the result also of a stolen ru n , left K en t the w inners of a m ost exciting finish by one w icket. T ate’s figures were quite out of the com m on. A m ore rem arkable perfor m ance has hard ly ever been chronicled, in an im p o rta n t m a tc h —four overs (three m aidens), one ru n , five wickets, all bowled. S ussex . First Innings. Mr. F .
