After an even and interesting game through out, the return match between these Counties, begun on Thursday at Maidstone, ended on Saturday evening in a draw. Kent, who were 34 behind on the first hands, wanted at the finish 44 to win with four wiskets to fall, a number which with Martin, Pentecost and Hon. H. Milles to follow Mr. Patterson and George Hearne would not have been very easy to get. Notts, who won the toss, made a good start against the bowling of Wright, Martin, the two Hearnes and Mr. Fox, scoring 193. Mr. Dixon, Barnes and Gunn were all seen to advantage, and the two professionals made the stand of the innings, adding 60 for the third wicket by sound batting. Kent had an hour and twenty minutes left for batting on the first night, and in this time thanks to the excellent crioket of Messrs. Patterson and Fox made 71 for the loss of only two wickets. On Friday, however, the game took a turn in favour of Notts and the innings closed for an addition of 82 runs. Flowers took four of the last wickets for nine runs, getting Alec Hearne, Mr. Milles and Martin with successive balls. Mr. Fox carried out his bat for 49, a mostuseful and well played innings, though he ought to have been caught before he had made a run. Notts entered on their second innings with a lead of 34 rung, but no lengthy stand was made against Wright and Martin, and the tenth wicket fell with the total at 91. Kent went in on Friday afternoon wanting 126 to win, and when rain stopped play at six o’clock 32 of them liad been got at the cost of three good wickets. Rain on Saturday prevented a re sumption until half-past three o’clock, and when play was recommenced Mr. Marchant, who was evidently put in in the hope of making runs quickly, was caught in the long- field. George Hearne then joined Mr. Pat terson, and as a draw was then clearly the object of the home team, the play was very tedious. Both batsmen are great adepts at the waiting game, and they carried it out to perfection. Hearne was in two hours and ten minutes for his sixteen, and, as his figures will show, Attewell’s 81 overs in the innings inoluded no less than sixty-five maidens. During the two hours and three-quarters of play on Saturday only fifty runs were soored, and Mr. Patterson, who was not out at the finish, had been in altogether three hours and a quarter for 28. At the close Kent wanted still 44 to win, with four wiokets to fall, a draw rather against than in their favour. N otts . First Innings. Second Innings.
