The Surrey eleven, after having a little the best of the game throughout, won this match, begun on Thursday at Brighton, in brilliant style on Saturday afternoon, thanks to some very fine batting by Mr. Shuter and Abol, with ten wickets to spare. Though the wicket at the outset was slow from recent rains, Sussex, who won the toss, were able to make a fairly good show, securing 168 before the last batsman was out. The chief credit of this performance belonged to Mr. J. M. Cotterill and Quaife. The former, who has for some years been busily engaged in the medical profession at Edinburgh, about 1875 was quite in the front rank of amateur bats men. Since 1877 he had practically given up first-class cricket, but the form he showed in this match proved that, notwithstanding la 'ik of practice, he is likely to be still of great use to his county. He played a really good and sound inningg of 52, and cricketers generally will be pleased at his successful re-appearance. When they took the field Sussex were fortu nate enough to dispose of Mr. Shuter easily, but the Reads punished the bowling severely, and eighty-six runs were added before the amateur, who had gone in first, was bowled for a well-played forty. Maurice Read, though not without some luck, hit in his best style, and his 64 was an innings of inestimable valus. At the close of the day Surrey had made 152 for the loss of six wickets, and on Friday morning this number was increased to 207, Abel contributing a careful and very use ful score of 41. Arthur Hide bowled again with creditable results, his seven wickets costing 44 runs. Heavy, rain stopped play on Friday afternoon at five o’clock, when Sussex had made 142 for nine wickets, so that there seemed every chance of an interesting finish. Owing to further showers the game could not be resumed until nearly half-past one o’clock on Saturday afternoon, and the innings closed for an addition of 15 runs, Humphreys taking out his bat for an exceedingly well got 44. Surrey had 118 to get to win, and on the wet ground the bowlers fared so badly, that Mr. Shuter and Abel were able to accomplish a brilliant feat. The former gave a very hard chance to cover-point in the first over, but afterwards neither batsmen made a mistake, and in just over eighty minutes the runs were got without the loss of a wicket.
