Cricket 1888

AUG. 2 , 1688 . CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, 809 LANCASHIRE v, GLOUCESTERSHIRE. The wioket was all in favour of the bowlers when these counties met on the ground of the Liverpool Club, Aigburth Road, Liverpool, on Thursday last, to commenqe their first match of the season. As a consequence the batsmen were generally seen to disadvantage, and, in deed, only one of the four completed innings reached the hundred. Lancashire winning the toss made a moderate show against the bowling of Woof, Roberts, and Mr. W . G. Grace, and the one feature of their innings was the batting of Briggs, who, though he ought to have been caught when he had made sixteen, hit very well for his thirty-five. Gloucestershire fared even worse when their turn came to bat, and in exactly an hour they were out for thirty-three, fire of the eleven having failed to score. Briggs and Barlow bowled unohanged, and the former’s figures were remarkable. His last sis overs were delivered i p r three runs and six wickets. Entering on their second innings with a very useful lead of 75 runs. Lancashire made a better stand, and thanks to Mr. Eccles and Sugg, the score was 61 when the third wicket fell. After their separation, though, Woof’s bowling proved very effective, and the innings after all closed for a total of only 97. Glou cestershire had a hopeless task when they went in on Friday morning, wanting 173 to win. The result, too, was never in doubt, as Briggs and Barlow again bowled without a change, and, as when the tenth wicket fell the total was only 56,Lancashire had an easy win, being 116 runs to the good. Briggs, who in the previous match at Manchester had taken thir teen Derbyshire wickets for 39 runs, brought a most successful week to a brilliant close. His twelve wickets cost 45 runs, so that in two following matches hewas creditedwith twenty- five wiokets for 84 runs, or an average of under three and a half runs. LANOA8HIRH. First Innings.
