Cricket 1888

258 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. JULY 12, import his batting was also attended w ith good results, and during a brief tour in Scotland he scored 73 and 52 for an England Eleven against W est of Scotland, as well as 176 and 46 not out of 48 for West of Scotland v. Bryn-y- neuadd. The high position he gained in 1887 has been more than maintained. Last year he was second to Robinson in the batting aver ages, and so far this season he shows every sign of holding, if nob of im proving his place. His best score for the County, as yet, has been his 102 not out against Gloucestershire, early last m onth at Gloucester, and last week in a m atch of small run-getting he was the chief scorer for the North of E ngland against the Australians at Manchester. That he is at present, in the opinion of m any, in the froTit. rank of professionals, is, too, proved by his selection to oppose the Gentlem en at the Oval to-day. There are indeed few more dangerous bats men among the Players. H is is m ostly a for ward game, and as he generally meets the ball hard and has great powers of hitting, when set he scores very fast, getting his runs all round with equal certainty. In out-cricket, too, he is seen to advantage, and in the long-field par ticularly is brilliant, being a safe catch, and covering a lot of ground. He has figured at the Association game of football, also, with credit, for Derby County and the Burnley Clubs, and is above the average of half-backs, playing with judgm ent as well as confidence. Our portrait is from a photograph by H aw kins & Co., 108, K ing’s R oad, Brighton. E S S E X v. H E R T S .
