Heavy rain prevented resumption on Tuesday until after luncheon, but the wicket did not appear to have suffered in any degree, and Mr. Read continued to score at a great rate, treating all the Oxford bowling with equal impartiality.. Henderson helped to add 76 before he was caught for a very useful and steady 36. Just as Mr. Read was within six runs of reaching the best score on record (Mr. W. G. Grace’s 344 for M.C.C. and Ground v. Kent at Canterbury in 1876), he got under one and was easily had at slip. His 338, the second highest innings recorded in a first- class match, was a remarkable display of well timed vigorous batting. He was six hours and a half at the wickets, and except for two very hot returns, at 55 and 76, to Mr. Forster, gave no chance. His score was made up of one 5, forty-six 4’s, fourteen 3’s, twenty-nine 2’s, and forty-nine singles. Surrey’s total of 650 is the highest in an important match, though it has been twice beaten in Australia. Batting in a bad light, Messrs. Gresson and Simpson were in an hour and a quarter for 31 runs, and in the fifty-five minutes to which the play yesterday was limited sixteen more were added, rain causing the game to be given up at four o’clock as a draw. Eight bowlers were tried during Surrey’s long innings, and of these Mr. Forster was the most successful. The Surrey bowlers delivered 97 overs for 45 runs, and Beaumont’s analysis shows 26 overs for 3 runs. SURREY v. OXFORD UNIVERSITY. The Surrey eleven were seen to very great advantage in this match, begun at tho Oval on Monday last. Going in first, on a perfect wicket, they had at the close of the first day scored 467 for the loss of only half their wickets, a large total, which they in creased to 650 before the innings closed at 5.20 on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Nepean, owing to an examination, was unable to play, and the Oxonians sadly missed his bowling during their long outing. Mr. Shuter and Abel put on 47 for the first wicket, and the latter and Mr. Key 49 for the second. Abel, who was batting in his very best form, was then joined by Mr. Read, and the Oxford bowlers had a bad time of it, the total being advanced to 238—an addition of 142—before Abel, who had again been most unlucky in just falling short of the hundred, was bowled by a good ball. He had been batting for three hours and a quarter without a mistake. Mr. W . W . Read and his namesake made the game lively during their stay, the latter con tributing 41 of 79 while he was in. Lohmann was finely caught by Scott after making 7, but Henderson helped Mr. Read to increase his S u r r e y . Abel, b Forster........... 97 Mr. J. Shuter, c Philipson, b Brown 24 Mr. K. J.
