Cricket 1888

212 CEICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OE THE GAME. ' > - JUN E 21, 1888. GLOUCESTERSH IRE v. NOTTS. The Gloucestershire eleven had considerably the worst of the luck in this match, begun on the ground of the East Gloucestershire Club on Thursday last, and had to put up with a decisive defeat. Rain stopped play for half- an-hour on the first day, but otherwise there was nothing to interfere with the play. The batting of the Nottinghamshire eleven, who went in first, was, therefore, the more dis appointing, and, indeed, the most interesting part of the innings was its close. The ninth wicket fell at 137, but the two last batsmen, Richardson and Shacklock, both hit with de termination, and they were not separated until the second day, having added 78 runs for the tenth wicket. The only other stand was while Barnes and Scotton were together, and this pair, who came together on the fall of the third wicket, were instrumental in increasing the total by 80 runs. Barnes, who was missed when he had got 24, was the highest scorer on the side with 51. Scotton was at the wickets two hours and a half for 37. The innings in all lasted four hours and a half, so that the runs were got at an average of 48 an hour. Rain, which prevented a commencement on the second day until three o’clock, stopped play again in the afternoon, and Gloucester shire had to bat under a great disadvantage. Barnes, helped by the ground, bowled with irresistible effect, and when play ceased on Friday half the Gloucestershire wickets were down for 63. The wicket on Saturday, too, was all in favour of the bowlers, and Barnes found the pitch so thoroughly to his liking that the Gloucestershire batsmen were generally seen to anything but advantage. Following on in a minority of 103, they made a very bad start, and the score was only 22 on the fall of the fifth wicket. Mr. Townsend, who had not played for his county before this season, made a slight diversion by his vigorous hitting, and he scared 29 out of 34 while he was in. Attewell and Barnes, however, quickly disposed of the rest, and the total only reached 75, leaving Notts the winners by an innings and 28 runs. Barnes made the best use of the wicket, and his figures were very noteworthy. He took thirteen wickets at a cost of 89 runs. Mr. Troup was in, it may be added, an hour and three quarters in Glou cestershire's seoond innings for ten runs. BOWLING ANALYSIS. N o t t s . O. M. R.W. O. M.R.W.
