Cricket 1888
JUNE 14, 1888. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME* 205 SUSSEX v. NOTTS. The Nottinghamshire eleven secured their second victory of the season over Sussex, at Brighton, on Tuesday, when they won with ten wickets to spare. Mr. J. A. Dixon was unable to play for Notts, but Sussex was also without one of its most useful representatives in Bean, whose all-round cricket has been much missed in the last two O r three matches. The Sussex captain was fortunate enough to win the toss, but the bowling of Barnes and Attewell, particularly of the former, proved too effective for any large scores, and Mr. Smith proved to be the highest contributor with 21. The wicket, owing to recent rains, was rather slow, and Notts, in their turn, began badly, the total only standing at 62 when the fifth wicket fell. Mr. Daft, who was batting over an hour and a half for 23, though, found a useful partner in Flowers, whosevigorous hitting proved an agreeable con trast to some uninteresting batting. Flowers, who has not been very successful of late with the bat, hit all round in brilliant style. He made 62 out of 79 while he was in without a chance, and ten of his hits were fours. Com mencing their second innings on Tuesday morning in a minority of 73 runs, Sussex, at the outset, showed even toworse advantage than in the first innings, and half the wickets were down with 24 still wanted to avert an innings defeat. Quaife, who was at the wickets two hours and a quarter, however, stayed for some time afterwards, and the partnership of Mr. Brann and Arthur Hide enabled the home team to put a better complexion on the game. Both batsmen played capital cricket, and the score was raised to the extent of 60 runs before they were parted, an invaluable stand. Notts had 75 to get to win when they went in a second time on Tuesday afternoon, and these were got at an average of one run a minute by Mr. Daft and Scotton, who were both in their best form.
