Cricket 1888
204 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. JtJNE 14, 1888. YORKSHIRE v. DERBYSH IRE. The Yorkshire eleven had the advantage throughout this match, played at Bradford on Monday and Tuesday, and when the game ended shortly before six on the second after noon had seven wickets to go down. Wade made his reappearance in the Yorkshire team, and Wainwright and he bowled so effectively at the outset that Derbyshire, though they won the toss, were dismissed for a total of 134. The batting of the Yorkshire- men on the first day was uneven, but, thanks to the brilliant hitting of Ulyett, who wa3 responsible for 82 out of 123 while in, they were able to head their opponents by 46 runs. Ulyett was let off at slip when he had made 58, but altogether his runs were got in his best style, and his hitting was very powerful throughout. His 82 included thirteen 4’s. The second innings of Derbyshire was only a slight improvement on the first. The chief honours this time rested with Ratcliffe and Mr. Walker. The former, who showed to great advantage at the Oval against Surrey at the end of last season, played sound cricket. He was in two hours and a quarter, and his score of 50 was without a flaw. Mr. Walker, who had played well in the first innings, again did good service, adding 33 by good cricket. In the match he claimed 72 runs, an excellent performance. Yorkshire went in after a down fall of rain with 110 to win and began badly, losing Hall before a run had been got. Ulyett was caught at point when he had made twenty-three out of thirty-nine, and Preston gave little trouble, being caught at fifty-eight. Lee and Peel, however, hit with great free dom, and the fifty-two wanted were soon knocked off, the 110 having been got in an hour and twenty minutes. Wade took nine Derbyshire wickets in the match at an average cost of under eight and a half runs. Hunter was able to take the wicket again for Yorkshire, but had to give up the gloves to Lee early in Derbyshire’ s second innings, owing to a severe blow on his hand. D e r b y s h ir e .
