Blenkiron did not bat, Pallingswick did not bat. Total .. 17 ..253 SU R R E Y v. KEN T. Som e surprisingly low scoring marked the first m atch between these counties, played at the Oval on M onday and Tuesday last. Kent was without several of its best players, and, in the absence of L ord Harris, R ev. R. T. Thornton, Messrs. Rashleigh, Patterson, Tonge, and Christopherson, the eleven could only be called a moderate one. On the other hand Surrey had not quite its full strength, in the absence of Henderson, who had injured his hand in the Yorkshire match, and Mr. W . E . R oller. K ent, winning the toss, went in first, but the batting presented few features of any interest, and the innings only occupied an hour and a quarter. M r. F ox, who played once for Surrey some years ago, and who has been scoring very heavily for the Crystal Palace Club during the last tw o or three summers, made his first appearance for Kent under the residential qualification, and proved to be the highest scorer on the side with 11. Beaum ont and Lohm ann bowled unchanged, and the latter m et w ith the greater success, taking five wickets for an average of less than six funs, while B eaum ont’ s four cost thirty- seven runs. Surrey did not make a very good start when their turn came to bat, and W ootton and W right were so well on the spot that the score was 61 when the fifth wicket fell. Later on, how ever, Read and Lohm ann with some little luck improved Surrey’s position materially, and with W ood’s assist ance Surrey were able to head their opponents’ score by 78 runs. On going in again Kent fared little better, and tho end of the first day found them still seven runs behind w ith only four wickets to fall. Resum ing on Tuesday m orning, F. Hearne, Mr. H edley, and Martin were soon dism issed, but Pentecost, the last man, hit away well, and W ootton and he added 24 for the last wicket. Surrey had, in the end, 30 to get to win, and two batsmen were dismissed before the task was accom plished, Kent thus lost by eight wickets. K e n t . First Innings. Second Innings. F.
