Cricket 1888
196 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. JUNE 14, 1888. SURREY v. YORKSHIRE. The Yorkshire Eleven did not show to ad vantage in this match, begun at the Oval on Thursday, and Surrey had gained a most de cisive victory, by an innings and 117 runs, three-quarters-of-an-hour before the time fixed for closing on the second evening. Lord Hawke won the toss, and, though the ground was apparently a trifle slow from recent rains, sent Surrey into the field. The Yorkshiremen only made a very moderate show against the bowling of Beaumont, who has often before proved effective against the county of his birth. He bowled in all forty-four overs and took eight of the ten wickets, at an average cost of exactly five runs. Hall and Mr. Hill were the only batsmen to get double figures, and the latter carried his bat through the innings. He was in two hours and a half for his 34, a most commendable display of defensive cricket. When Surrey went in the ground had dried, and runs came fast. Mr. Key and Abel added 88 for the second wicket, and the two Reads gave the Yorkshiremen even more trouble, raising the score to the extent of 91 runs while they were together. At the end of the first day Surrey were 105 runs ahead with only four wickets down, and thanks to some fine cricket by Messrs. W . W. Read and Bowden, the total was increased by 127 runs before the tenth wicket fell. Mr. Read’s 108 was a display in every way worthy of him. He was at the wickets three hours, and though he gave two hard chances late in his innings, his play all round showed excellent timing and judgment. This, we may add, was his second score of a hundred for Surrey in the week. Mr. Bowden, who kept wicket for Wood, showed to greater advantage than he has as yet done in an important match. He played with considerable confidence and freedom, and his 70 was altogether free from a mistake. Rain caused an interval of over an hour in Yorkshire’s second innings, and the bowlers profited in a small degree thereby. Still, the Yorkshire batting, with the excep tion of that of Mr. Hill and Wainwright, who added 63 runs for the fifth wicket, was not of a very high order. The professional played with great pluck and freedom, and is likely to be of use to the County. Lohmann was this time the most successful bowler for Surrey, his five wickets only costing 37 runs. Beau mont’s figures, thouf'i., were the best of the match. Eleven Yorkshire wickets fell to him for an aggregrate of 74 runs. Y o r k sh ir e . First Inninga.
