Cricket 1888
JUNE 14, 1888. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 195 M IDDLESEX v. NOTTS. The Nottinghamshire eleven were not favoured by luck in their first match of the season with Middlesex, at Lord’s, and had to put up with a decisive defeat. Messrs. Buck land and Webbe put on 61 runs for the first wicket of Middlesex, but after this, for a time, things went badly, and half the side were out with the total only 114. Messrs. Vernon and Paravicini, however, by brilliant hitting, im proved the position of Middlesex materially, and the partnership, which produced 117 runs, turned the scale altogether in their favour. Mr. Vernon’s hitting was of the most resolute character. His 88, which included a five, were got without a chance. Mr. Paravicini also hit freely, though with more luck. He was let off when he had got fifteen, but though fortunate in several of his strokes, had not another actual let-off. Among his figures were ten fours. Notts, who were without Mr. J. A. Dixon, had twenty minutes’ batting on Thursday evening, and during this time made two runs for the loss of one of their best bats men, Mr. H. B. Daft. Rain, which fell heavily during the night, delayed the resumption on Friday, and also the re-commencement after luncheon. Under such conditions the Not tinghamshire team were generally not seen to advantage with the bat, and Scotton and Atte well alone got over twenty runs. The latter hit freely, but the feature of the innings was the defensive cricket of Scotton, who went in first and was ninth out. He was in nearly four hours and a quarter, and made 67 of 171 got during his stay at the wickets. Following on in a minority of 142, Notts had cleared off 40 of their arrears when play ceased on Friday night for the loss of one batsman, Mr. Wright. Rain stopped the renewal of play on Saturday morning until nearly twelve o’clock, and when the game was resumed the ground helped the bowlers considerably. Mr. Buckland and Burton too, made full use of their opportunities, and though the total was at one time 50 for two wickets down, the remaining batsmen only added 37. Middlesex were thus left with an easy win by an innings and 55 runs. Mr. Vernon caught four of the Nottingham eleven in the second innings at mid-off. Mr. Buck land and Burton equally divided the wickets, as will be seen. The former’s five cost fifteen, the latter’s thirty, runs. M id d lesex . Mr. E. H. Buckland, c Wright, b Flowers 44 Mr. A. J. LANCASHIRE' Rain on Friday and Saturday prevented the first match of the season between these Counties, begun on Thursday at Gloucester, reaching the completion of even its first stage. Owing to wet the wicket at the outset was heavy, and Gloucestershire, without Mr. Townsend, going in first, were dismissed for a small soore of 48, of which as many as 37 were contributed by two batsmen, Mr. E. M. Grace and Painter. Barlow and Briggs were the Lancashire bowlers, and the former did a fine performance, taking five wickets at a cost of only thirteen runs. Rain fell heavily before Lancashire commenced batting, and when they did go in they made a bad start, losing Barlow at 14, and Mr. Hornby at 23. Mr. Eccles and Briggs, though, put on 86 runs before the latter was bowled, and the former, with Sugg, added 64 before the amateur was run out. Mr. Eccles was let off before he had scored, and again in the long-field at 29. Sugg, who was missed at square-leg when he had got eight, hit with great brilliance, and was not out at the close of the day, having scored 102 out of 173 while he was at the wicket*. This is the first innings of three figures Sugg has made in an important match. No play was possible on Friday or Saturday, and the game was left drawn Lancashire being 124on with two wickets to fall.
