Cricket 1888
JUNE 7, 1888. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 189 YORKSHIRE v. LEICESTERSH IRE. The Leicestershire eleven, who had beaten Surrey at Leicester earlier in the week, had all the worst of their next match, begun at Huddersfield on Friday. Though the York- shiremen were without Ulyett, Preston, Peel and Hunter, the game went altogether in their favour, and the continuous rain of Saturday, in all probability, saved Leicester shire from a severe defeat. Yorkshire, going in first, were dismissed for 234 from the bat, of which 161 were contributed by three bats men, Mr. Day, Lee and Wainwright. When Leicestershire went in Creighton and Wade bowled with great success, and they got rid of twelve wickets for an aggregate of 88 runs without a change. The game was drawn, Leicestershire wanting 146 to avert an innings defeat with eight wickets in hand. Y o r k sh ir e . 19 Hall, b Pougher Mr. A. G. The Kent eleven showed to advantage at all S oints in their first match of the season with tiddlesex, begun at Lord’s on Thursday last. Neither county had quite its best team, and it deserves to be stated that Kent, when it was found that Lancashire declined to give up Briggs for the Players at the Oval, generously allowed Walter Wright to take part in that match. Kent had the good fortune to win the toss, and, though Mr. Atkins was soon dis missed, the brothers Hearne played such excellent cricket that, at luncheon time, the total was 135 with only one batsman out. Frank Hearne was at the wickets altogether two hours and ten minutes for his 78, his brother half an hour longer for 21 runs less. After their separation, the Middlesex bowlers had a better time of it, and, though Mr. Hedley and Martin hit well towards the last, the total was less than at one time seemed likely. This result was in a great measure due to the effective bowling of the Middlesex captain, Mr. Webbe. He delivered 33 oveis for 43 runs and five wickets. Though Middle sex had a good batting side, they made a very moderate show against the bowling of Mr. Hedley and Martin. Only five batsmen got double figures; rtrtd Mr. P. Northeote, who represented the county for the first time, we believe, in this match, proved to be the highest scorer with 21. Mr. Hedley was singularly successful with the ball, as will be seen; he took eight of the ten wickets in 105 balls at a cost of only 31 runs. Following on in a heavy minority of 174 runs, Middlesex at first fared badly, and two wickets were down with the score at 16. Mr. Scott, however, found useful partners in Messrs. Walker and Hadow, and, thanks to these three, the total in the end reached a very respectable figure. Mr. Scott’s batting was quite up to his best standard. He was at the wicket, altogether for four hours, and, though he had two lives, his innings was, on the whole, an admirable display of cricket. Kent, when they went in a second time, had only 53 to get to win, and these were got for the loss of three batsmen. Mr. Hedley’s bowling was one of the most noteworthy features of the m atch; he took fourteen Middlesex wiokets at a cost of 109 runs. K en t . First Innings. C lapham W a n d erers . Mr. F. M.
