Cricket 1888

188 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. JtJNE 1, 1888. LANCASHIRE v. SUSSEX. Heavy rain on Saturday prevented the com pletion of this match, begun at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Thursday. Bean was still unable to play for Sussex, but, on the other hand, Mr. Hornby, Mr. Jowett, and Pilling were all absent from the Lancashire eleven, whioh included a new wicket-keeper, Whiteside,of Leyland, for the first time. Sussex, winning the toss, took the innings, and thanks to the brilliant cricket of Messrs. Newham and McCormick, followed by some good batting by Humphreys, were in nearly the whole of the first day. Mr. McCormick made 64 out of 87 runs while he was in, and his play was characterised by great vigour as well as judgment. Mr. Newham’s 128 was, though, the feature of the innings. He was in just over four hours, and during this time Aid not make a mistake of any kind. Briggs took nine of the ten wickets, and his figures it will be seen were very good. Lancashire, who at the end of the first day had scored 33 with out the loss of a wicket, did not fare very well on the second morning. Mr. Crosfield and Barlow, the first two batsmen, put on 63 before they were parted, but after their separa tion Mr. Smith bowled with remarkable effect, and the remaining batsmen only added 87, the Sussex captain taking seven wickets for 59 runs. Following on 130 runs to the bad, Lancashire made a bad start, and three of the best wickets were down with the total only 12. The brilliant hitting of Briggs, however, entirely changed the aspect of the game. The little professional punished all the Sussex bowlers with equal severity, and when play ceased he was still in, having made 126 out of 206 runs while he was at the wickets. The game, owing to wet, was left as it ended on Friday night, Lancashire being 98 on with three wickets to fall. S ussex . Tester, b Briggs ... 0 Quaife, b Barlow ... 0 Mr. W.
