MAY 31, 1888. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 178 CRICKET AT OXFORD UN IVER SITY. OXFORD UN IVERSITY v. LANCASHIRE Although neither side had quite its full strength, some good all-round cricket was the outcome of this match played at Oxford on Monday and Tuesday last. Lancashire was without Mr. Hornby, Mr. A. G. Steel and Sugg, while the University could not claim the services of Lord George Scott and Messrs. Cochrane and Fowler. Going in first, Lan cashire reached a fairly good total of 179, a result chiefly due to Mr. Eccles, who made 75 out of 107 runs while he was in. He had two lives in the early part of his innings, but none the less, it was on the whole a good display of free cricket. Among his hits was one to square-leg for six. The University lost six of their best wickets for 35 runs, and it was only a very useful stand by Messrs. Nepean and Phillipson, who added 46 runs, that enabled them to save a follow on. In the second innings of the County Mr. Jowett, Briggs and Robinson all scored fast, and the hitting of thesa three batsmen was of the finest character. Mr. Jowett’s figuresincluded one six, Robinson’s two square-leg hits also for six. While they were together, Mr. Jowett and Briggs made 100 runs in a little over fifty minutes. When they entered on their second innings the University wanted 232 to win. They never at any time, however, looked like getting the number, and when the tenth wicket had fallen were 221 runs behind. Ward’s five wickets for Lancashire only cost 29 runs. L a n c a s h ir e . Second Innings. cForster.bSmlth 5 run out ..........53 First Innings. Barlow,c Simpson, bSmith 12 Mr. G. Jowett, run out ...
