Cricket 1888

m CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD Off THE GAME. MAT 31, 1888. M IDDLESEX v. YORKSH IRE. Some surprisingly low scoring marked the first match of the season between these counties, commenced at Lord’s on Thursday last. On the first day twenty-three wickets were dismissed for an aggregate of 269 runs, and the game was completed by twenty minutes past one o’clock on the second after noon. The Yorkshiremen, who went in first, made a bad start, and four of their best bats men were out for 33 nv*s. Peel, however, came to the rescue with a most valuable score of 37, and, thanks to some useful help by Mr. Hill, Preston, and the Colt Wainwright, the total eventually reached 137. The Middle sex batting wras even more disappointing than that of Yorkshire. Mr. Walker played well for his 27, but no one else, except M r. O’Brien, whose finely-hit 44 was the highest score of the match, made any stand, although the last man, Mr. Robertson, lent useful aid, helping to increase the total by 25 runs. When play ceased on the first night, three wickets were down in Yorkshire’s second innings for 10 runs, and, on the resumption on Friday m'orning, the exhibition was even worse. Burton and Mr. Buckland, indeed, bowled unchanged, and in fifty-five minutes the last seven wickets were secured for an addition of 33 runs. The innings had lasted altogether only an hour and a quarter, and Creighton, a slow left-handed bowler, engaged by the Todmorden Club, proved to be the highest contributor with 10. Burton’s bowling was remarkably successful. Hie was credited with seven of the ten wickets, and at a cost of only 18 runs, extraordinary figures on a fast pitch. Middlesex, with 59 to win, lost Mr. Lucas at 27, but Messrs. Webbe and Scott quickly knocked off the balance, leaving Mid dlesex with an easy victory by nine wickets. Mr. Buckland’s bowling was of great assist ance to Middlesex. His seven wickets were got for an average of under eight runs. Hunter hurt his hand badly just after the commence ment of the second innings of Middlesex, and had to give up the wicket to Lee. Mr. Bryant, who, we believe, plays for Finchley, made a very promising debut for Middlesex as a wicket-keeper. The wicket, it may be added, was hardly up to the best standard of Lord’s, and the ball, at times, got up awkwardly Y o r k sh ir e . First Innings.
