Cricket 1888

MAY24,1888. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME.157 E S S E X y. D E R B Y SH IR E . The Derbyshire eleven supplemented their viotory over M.C.C. and Ground at Lord’s last week with another victory, in this their second match of the season, played at Leyton on Mon day and Tuesday. Essex, who were without Mr. C.D. Buxton, winning the toss went in first, but they only made a moderate show, and at the end of the first day they were but eleven runs to the good, haying lost half their wickets in the second innings. Thanks, however, to some free hitting by Mr. R. P. Sewell, on the second morning, they were able to put Derby shire in with 56 to win, and this number cost the latter three batsmen, Essex thus losing their first match of the season by seven wickets. The most noteworthy features of the match were the all-round cricket of Chatterton and the bowling of Davidson. The latter was credited with nine Essex wickets at an average of under four runs. Messrs. Hindley and Gosling made their first appear ance for their respective Counties in this match. E s s e x . First Innings. Mr. H. G. Owen, b Chat terton ............................18 Mr. C.
