Cricket 1888
154 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. MAT 24, 1888. day. Going in first, he was not out when play ceased, having contributed 188, or more than half the runs. On the second morning he continued to bat in his very best style, and when he was out the ninth wicket the total was 428. He was altogether about seven hours at the wickets, and except for a chance when he had got 26 there was no flaw in a remark able performance. Among his hits were twenty fours. Sussex made a bad start, and when the fifth wicket fell the total was only 104. At this period, however, Jesse Hide and Mr. Sm ith became partners, and their batting altogether changed the aspect of the game. In a little less than an hour and three- quarters 161 runs were added, and their stand enabled Sussex to make a really good show. Hide was let off in the long-field when he had got 78, but with that exception there was no mistake that we saw in his score of 130. Mr. Smith, too, hit with great resolution, and his 85, though not faultless, was an invaluable innings. Sussex in the end saved the follow-on, a most credit able, achievement against a big total of 428. Yesterday the run-getting was, of course, not up to the standard of the two previous days, though some good cricket was shown by Messrs. Radcliffe and Newham in particular. When play ceased Sussex wanted 88 to win, with seven wickets to fall. G loucestershire . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. W. G. Grace, hw, b Humphreys ................... 215 c and b A.
